Folding@home: Team BitCash

As COVID-19 has spread across the globe and has affected us all, either directly or indirectly, we have searched for a way for the BitCash team and community to provide assistance with this pandemic.

We stumbled upon a platform called Folding@home.

Folding@home uses complex modelling computations to look at how proteins “fold,” or assemble into shapes. The process can be applied to the proteins that make up viruses, and what is learned can be applied to research into attacking those viruses with vaccines or medication. The app collects assignments from Folding@home’s servers and runs them in the background, either while you work or when your system is idle, then returns the results when completed.

Folding@home’s goal is to help find a cure for different diseases, ranging from cancer to Alzheimer’s to Ebola. With the global spread of the corona-virus, the project is now focusing on that challenge. Those who download the app at foldingathome.org/start-folding are automatically put in the cue to work on that virus.

Once installed, your computer will receive some numbers to crunch that could find the key to a vaccine or treatment for COVID-19. It can run in the background while you do other things, or — if you’ve got a spare system sitting around — you can devote that hardware to it exclusively.

BitCash pledges 20,000 BitCash to proportionally distribute to anyone that decides to donate computational power to Folding@home between now and 31 March 2020 11:59 PM CST.

For instance, if you are responsible for 50% of the Work Units submitted from Team BitCash, then you would receive 10,000 BitCash.
